Meet Taje Fowler – Representing Regional Youth

A proud decedent of the Wurundjeri nation with family connection to the Wiradjuri nation with family in Narromine, Taje Fowler’s dream is to see the young people she works grow up to achieve their goals and aspirations.  Currently studying a Bachelor of Community and Social Development for Indigenous Communities, Taje one day hopes to work supporting youth in remote Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory. Taje has such a love for learning and lives by Dalai Lama’s quote that “when you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But when you listen, you may learn something new.”

A loved and valued member of our LeaderLife team, Taje started out as a devoted volunteer assisting with the Skillbuilders afterschool activities. She instantly fitted in, was welcomed by the community and adored by the kids and her peers alike. From volunteer to LeaderLife’s Community Research Officer, Taje collects data for YARRN (Youth At Risk Research Network) through the University of NSW that is currently researching innovative ways to engage at risk youth through a holistic framework. The research tracks our youth program participants overall wellbeing including education, employment, mental and physical health, connection to culture and family. Taje also coordinates the daily Skill Builders activities, offering 5-12 year olds with fun and educational activities. A talented painter, Taje has helped the kids create community murals for NAIDOC Day and another that was recently on display at the Western Plains Cultural Centre with a simple but important message “Lets Grow…..Our Kids….Our Community”.

Taje has volunteered as a youth worker in both Sydney and America learning about GONA (Gathering of Native Americans) and GOTO (Gathering of Traditional Owners) gaining an understanding about the wellness wheel and the circle of courage principles that underpin strong community development. Taje is passionate about sharing and implementing these principles in the programs LeaderLife delivers.

Appointed as a member of the NSW 2021 Regional Youth Taskforce, Taje represents the Central West & Orana region with 17 other members from across regional NSW. Members of the taskforce advise our Minister for Regional Youth, Hon. Bronnie Taylor MLC on issues that affect young people living in regional NSW. The Taskforce allows members to have their say on ways the government can improve outcomes for young people in regional NSW and better deliver services.
